This is so wonderful. I've been teaching for 16 years, and this year has been the most challenging of all. I've always prided myself with having effective classroom management, but this year I focused on the art of forming and keeping a straight line. I'm a seventh grade teacher. Around March, we heard reports of bullying in the hallway. Knowing I can't be in two places at once, I began requiring my students to form a straight line outside my door. Once all the students were in the line, I invited them in with a big smile. That way, I could monitor hallway behavior and the kids were standing in line, looking at a big sign I had made that said, "Be polite. Be responsible. Be ready to learn."

I am so pleased to read this article. I knew that this notion of forming a straight line was important; I had just never seen it in print. Thank you!!
